Plant Base; a temporary, sustainable cooking school for plant based cooking

Scroll

Plant base is a temporary space to teach plant-based cooking and provide a tranquil place for rest and dining amidst nature, offering a break from hectic student and professional life. Activities include cooking, dining, a viewing deck over the pond for feeding waterfowl, outdoor gardens, and seating areas.

A key consideration was the environmental impact and lifespan of the building, especially since Camley Street Natural Park is a nature reserve with rare plants, fungi, and animals. To minimize harm and preserve the site, I used recycled materials like cardboard tubes, drink crates, and wood. Except for the main classroom, the design is intended to decay over time, avoiding long-term impact and preventing further gentrification of Kings Cross.

An extremely important aspect when thinking about my design was to consider the life span of my building, and it’s impact on the environment. Since Camley Street Natural Park I did not want to create something that would harm the site.

There are many rare plants, fungi and animals that inhabit the site, so it was important for me to try and preserve this as much as possible.

In addition to this, there is a lack of nature reserves in Central London, and so keeping as much of the site and its inhabitation was extremely important.

ducks…?

before coming up with a design concept, we were tasked to pick anything on the site as a starting point for our project. since my site was connected to Regent’s Canal, there were many ducks swimming along and coming up into the nature park. As an animal lover, this was immediately my first interest on the site and what my project is ultimately based around.
